Syracuse

Syracuse is located on the Eastern coast of Sicily, approximately 60 km more South than Catania. It is well-known first of all because of its vast Archaeological Park, recognised with the name of Neapolis, literally translated into ‘New City’. It consists of 240.000 square metres, where it is possible to revive the atmosphere and spaces created and lived from the Greeks first and the Romans afterwards, in a net of  streets, caves, caverns, theatres and amphitheatres, necropolis and sanctuaries.
The majestic Greek Amphitheatre (V century a.C.) rises among all. It is the biggest Greek Amphitheatre in Sicily and one of the biggest in the world. It still hosts nowadays, in a spectacular scenery, several classic performances.
The ‘Latomia del Paradiso’ is the most famous one among the numerous stone caves, named ‘ Latomie’, that were excavated in the old times to extract the calcareous blocks used for buildings walls and other constructions in the Greek city. The ‘Latomia del Paradiso’ or Heaven Cave, hosts the so called ‘Ear of Dionysius’. It is an artificial cave, with an ‘S’ shape, named by Michelangelo from Caravaggio, who visited Syracuse in 1608,  because of its special feature: each sound inside the cave is amplified up to 16 times.

Beside the Neapolis, another precious jewel that makes Syracuse a compulsory stop when visiting Sicily is represented by Ortigia Island, very ancient centre of the city, which offers in a bit less than 1 square km, the magic and charm of little alleys, balconies full of flowers, small houses and little shops, and at the same time elegant buildings, big churches, Greek temples, Svevian, Aragon and Baroque palaces, all made with a beautiful white calcareous stone.

For those who love spending some time at the beach, you can find several beaches and beach facilities in the South of the city, without going too far away. One of the most beautiful ones is for sure Fontanebianche Beach, 3 Km of extremely white and thin sand.
